make / let someone do
The causative can mean either making or letting someone do something. The particle mainly reflects the base verb: the person doing an intransitive action is usually marked with を (子供を歩かせる), while with a transitive verb that person is usually marked with に (妹に部屋を掃除させる, where 部屋 takes を). The particle alone does not decide between "make" and "let"; context does.
My mother made my little sister clean the room.
I let my child play in the park.
