How to review Japanese words without cramming
Turn a long review queue into small retrieval sessions, and use mistakes to decide what to practise next.

Make the first batch small
Open a ten-card review. Pause before revealing each answer, even if you are unsure. The useful part is attempting to retrieve the meaning, reading, or form. Reading the answer and thinking ‘I knew that’ is much easier than producing it yourself.
If the queue is large, you do not have to finish it today. Complete one small batch, then decide whether you still have attention for another. The number due describes the queue; it is not a verdict on your effort.

- Answer before revealing, then grade what you actually recalled.
- Stop after ten cards if your attention is fading.

Treat the miss as a clue
When you miss a word, ask what broke: did you recognise the written form but forget the meaning, know the meaning but not the reading, or confuse it with a similar word? Those are different problems. Revisit that entry’s audio or example sentence instead of repeating its English translation ten times.
When a card gives you a sentence, try to understand the word in that sentence and then cover it. Context helps you use a word, but the check still needs to happen from memory.

- Pick one missed word and inspect its example or audio in the dictionary.
- Try to recall it again later without reopening the entry first.

Let tomorrow’s review do its job
The review system schedules cards to return. A word you answered correctly may disappear for a while; that is expected. You do not need to manually restart the entire list each day. Come back when cards are due and use the time you save for a lesson, listening, or reading.
If you are adding many new words but never reaching the end of a short review, slow down the new material for a few days. Keep the habit small enough to repeat.

- Pair review with one meaningful use of Japanese outside the cards.
